Although you may like colour, when it comes to home décor, many people are tentative and undecided resulting in a room that doesn’t match their expectations. They hover between being bold or bland and end up with a mish mash that doesn’t work for them.

For a statemental room that is almost foolproof consider using black and white. Black and white is THE classic colour combination. It never dates and always stands the test of time. It’s a combination that you’ll never tire of – it can adapt to almost any home style from art deco through to minimalist to Scandinavian. Whatever your style black and white will most certainly work, it’s a colour combination that with a little consideration can give you the designed look you crave for your home.

If you consider colour as spices in a recipe it all starts to make sense – too much of one spice and the dish is ruined. However by using black and white you are using a classic recipe that cannot go wrong For anyone fearful of colour who wants a statemental room monochrome is the perfect solution.

However there are a few rules to consider when using such emphatic colouring. Firstly consider what you’d like the atmosphere in your room to feel like – do you want it to be cocooning and comforting – if so tip the balance slightly towards black. Do you want the feeling to be crisp and functioning then tip the balance towards white? You can add and subtract items until you feel the balance is right for you.

Texture and pattern are easier to integrate into your room if you’re basing it around two colours. Strong graphic prints work well mixed together, patterns that you’d never consider mixing in a multi coloured room work sensationally together in a monochrome room. Think black and white graphic wallpaper and a patterned rug.

To make a monochrome room even more interesting start to mix different textures together, rough with smooth, soft with hard, flat with mirrored surfaces. The more visual interest a room has, without overloading the brain with colour choices – the more comfortable and welcoming it will appear.

Think about grouping monochrome accessories together to add interest, let the eclectic textures do all the work for you, adding visual interest and letting the colour pull the items together no matter how disparate.

Any room needs good lighting and a monochrome room is no exception. Think about the important objects in your room and light them well to draw the eye towards them.

Here’s an interesting fact. Did you know that by painting a wall in a dark colour – and here we’re not talking black but any dark colour will do – you immediately start to blur the boundaries making the walls start to disappear and therefore seem bigger. A great way to deal with small rooms , try painting one wall in black and accessorizing with white accessories.

So be bold and experiment, I’m sure that you won’t be disappointed. Black and white will always give you spectacular results.
